A statement by Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, expressed sorrow on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and echoes the Secretary General’s condemnation of the Hamas attacks and the safe release of hostages and calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. The statements highlighted any threat to use nuclear weapons is inadmissible and illustrate the urgency to achieve an ME WMDFZ. The statement noted the enduring and urgent need to address the root causes of the conflict, including through a broader peace and security architecture in the region, of which a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear and other Weapons of Mass Destruction should be an important part. The statement calls for the full participation of all states in the region and urges international community to provide their strong support to this process.
