Proving New Approaches to Transparency and Verification in Nuclear Security and Disarmament

Because nuclear weapons are so destructive, it’s vital that agreements to control fissile materials and nuclear warheads contain measures to ensure violations are identified, or materials or components for weapons don’t go astray. Additionally, nuclear weapon elimination simply isn’t possible without verification. UNIDIR’s research in these areas is focused on overcoming challenges in nuclear verification, contributing to progress on nuclear disarmament and risk reduction measures, and strengthening current agreements to curb weapons of mass destruction (WMD). In 2020-21, we aim to apply our findings to different contexts, for instance to the question of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
