Exploring Synergies in Reporting under Multilateral Conventional Arms Treaties and Instruments

The objective of this project is to identify options and approaches to facilitate and strengthen reporting by States in the area of conventional arms, including small arms and light weapons (SALW). In order to achieve this objective, this project will provide policy guidance to States on converging sources of information, methods and approaches that can be used to facilitate reporting under various multilateral conventional arms treaties and instruments. Concretely, this project proposes to:

1. MAP OBLIGATIONS: Identify and map reporting obligations and requirements for select multilateral treaties and instruments in the area of conventional arms (such as UN Programme of Action on Small Arms, the UN Register of Conventional Arms, the Arms Trade Treaty, UN Firearms Protocol, and relevant regional instruments and export control regimes);

2. HIGHLIGHT SYNERGIES: Identify areas of convergence in reporting obligations and requirements, and work to highlight information and methods that can be utilized for reporting under multiple instruments; and

3. IDENTIFY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES: Explore possible options and approaches to facilitate and strengthen reporting by States in this context, including identifying good practices, potential challenges and opportunities moving forward.
