Addressing the Future of WMD Arms Control

Greater tension between nuclear-armed States, multipolarity and new developments in strategic technologies, such as, new missiles and missile defences, anti-satellite weapons and cyber offensive capabilities, are contributing to strategic unpredictability. In turn, that unpredictability propels the modernization of nuclear arsenals and other strategic weapons, and is undercutting confidence in arms control and disarmament. UNIDIR is carrying out research and working with governments and experts to identify and promote ways to reduce strategic unpredictability and build mechanisms to better sustain international security cooperation. Through our future of arms control initiative, we are exploring a number of cutting-edge themes to narrow the gap between nuclear deterrence and disarmament policy and practice.
